Plant Bowen, a 3,160 megawatt coal-fired power station, in Cartersville, Georgia evaluated and installed a non-chemical dechlorination process, the Hydro-Optic™ (HOD) UV water treatment technology, to improve the overall quality of reverse osmosis (RO) feed water. After three years of operation, the RO membranes are operating at the same level as new elements. In 2019 this application was recognized for its technical excellence and received an Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Generation Technology Transfer Award.

With the installation of the Hydro-Optic™ (HOD) UV system, which will ensure an undetectable free available chlorine (FAC) outlet concentration below 0.02 ppm, a North American baseload generation facility will achieve effective non-chemical, dechlorination treatment of its boiler make up water to protect its ion exchange (IX) demineralization process. The facility will benefit from the HOD UV system’s ability to reduce organic load, which will lead to fewer regeneration cycles of the IX resin and extend media life, while offering better absorbance.

At a coal-fired electric generation facility with a nameplate capacity of 604 megawatts, high purity feed water for the boiler and steam cycle is provided through a treatment scheme composed of multi-media filtration, micron filters, reverse osmosis (RO) filtration and mixed-bed resin treatment. In 2015 they decided to eliminate the use of biocides and achieve non-chemical disinfection through the use of a proprietary Hydro-Optic™ ultraviolet (HOD UV) technology.

Following the spread of zebra mussels to the Great Lakes in 1988, OPG installed chlorination systems in the early 1990s to mitigate their threat. However, new organizational environmental policies resulted in OPG’s evaluation of environmentally friendly methods of controlling invasive mussels that do not expose fish, plants and other aquatic life to hazardous chemicals. Additionally, OPG wanted to reduce the hazards of chemical exposure to its staff.

Chlorine and biocides have traditionally been used to mitigate biofouling and manage microbial induced corrosion, and are commonly injected into the feed lines of the water treatment process at power plants to reduce the microbial load. However, when the water treatment process consists of reverse osmosis (RO) trains, it is important to make sure the membranes are protected from oxidation by chlorine. Therefore, dechlorination is undertaken to remove free chlorine compounds from the feedwater in order for the RO trains and other chlorine-sensitive equipment to operate properly.
